Caves

One of the most visited attractions in the region is without doubt the Nerja caves. These series of caves were discovered by some school boys in 1959. These caves are located in a small village of Maro just 4 km away from Nerja. Maro is a small village to the east of Nerja that falls within the auspices of the Town .Tourists can easily reach them and admire this spectacular natural treasure. Hidden within the mountains that make up Nerja’s background, the caves have been declared national monument and hold many secrets.

The cave's treasures include wall paintings believed to be more than 20,000 years old and a 63 metre stalactite which is the longest in the world and hold the Guinness World Record. The caves now get more than 500,000 visitors a year, they are the third most visited monument in Spain.

Every June there is a Festival Of Music and Dance held in the auditorium in the first cave which provides a magical backdrop to ballet, classical music and singing. Top names perform and the seating is limited so enquire about tickets well in advance. There are lovely gardens to picnic in and also a restaurant which has brilliant views over the coast serving anything from coffee and cake to full meals at reasonable prices.
