Nerja is the gateway to the natural beauty, El Pinarillo, Rio Chillar and Iznajar Dam are some of the examples. There are many picnic barbeque ares in the heart of the National Park.

National Park offers some stunning views of the valley. In early summer you can expect to find the air thick with butterflies. Lizards and snakes will be sunning themselves in the early morning sun and you may be lucky enough to see an Ibex the Andalucian mountain goat.

Many walkers and ramblers start their day off here being an ideal base to park up and use the facilities. The area is open from mid October through to early June. It is closed to vehicles in the summer months due to the potential fire risks and fires/barbeques are strictly not allowed.

Balcón de Europa - The Balcon de Europa (Balcony of Europe) was constructed in 1487. Formerly a IX Century Castle, it is now a viewing point above the sea. At the Calahonda gap, the Paseo de Carabineros begins, a scenic path winding the way through the rocks bordering the seashore down to the Burriana Beach.

The Chillar River (Rio Chillar) - Walking is not possible from the end of May to the beginning of September in southern Spain. This walk is one of the few exceptions: it is best in June, July and August, because you walk along a cool river bed in a narrow, shady canyon. Unlike many Andalusian rivers, this one has water, at least from the “fabrica de luz” (a very small hydroelectric station). Take a towel as there are many small pools to swim in.

Iznajar Dam - The Iznájar Dam and reservoir is located in the Geníl river, in the andalusian municipalities of Iznájar, Rute, Loja, Zagra, Cuevas de San Marcos and Algarinejo. Occupies land in the provinces of Málaga, Córdoba and Granada.
